Symphony in Cacophony

In the time of crisis, Indian Association for Women Studies organized a National Convention on Women’s Studies Centers which was held on 23 rd august at Constitution Club of India, Delhi. The purpose of this conference was to unite hundreds of students, teachers and researchers who are currently associated with Women’s Studies Centers. The women’s movement led to the emergence of women’s studies in India. The CSWI (Committee on status of Women in India) came up with the Towards Equality Report. The report had shocked the nation when it provided the evidence of the deteriorating situation of women in India. This report led to the need of specialized study of the situation and conditions of women in India. The boundaries of women’s studies have thus expanded and developed. One day in the middle of the road I found her She was beautiful, Her mesmerized eyes forced me to look at her. The magic of the brown eyes stunned me for a moment, their sparkle had an unspoken world in it. She was a mystery wrapped in a pink dress She was only 3 years old but the confidence in her, forces you to pause for a while and look at yourself She is not aware of the word beggary but she treats it like a fun game. To beg beautifully is her art through which she hypnotized me The moment she spoke- didi kulfi khila do I could'nt hold back myself Embraced her in my arms... The first thought came in my mind, how will she survive in this unkind world.. I wish, I have the power to protect her from beggary and hardships.... Provide her a future where one day, This baby would grow up as a beautiful woman. 

Recently Supreme Court passed a judgment in which there will be no automatic arrest in cases filed under 498A and the court is trying to involve a committee comprising members of the civil society.  On Monday 31st July at 11:00 morning, around 16 women organizations marched to Supreme Court to oppose the dilution of 498A.  Section 498A of IPC deals with the prevention of cruelty against women such as domestic violence and dowry. 498A strengthens women power but the Supreme Court judgement tries to weaken it. From 1980s, the protests against dowry death brought in light the agony and death of innocent brides in India. After much struggle, finally we got 498A. The questions to be asked are, Why Supreme Court is diluting 498A? Why is a woman's access to justice seen as an act of revenge by an egoistic woman? Should the woman's right to life with dignity be subservient to preserving the family and marriage?
